Earthquake is perhaps one natural disaster that strikes fear even in the strongest of hearts. As most earthquakes strike without warning, familiar surroundings can quickly turn into sudden hazards, especially for those dwelling in heavily populated areas. In the unlikely event that a massive earthquake does occur, remaining calm & thinking on your feet could allow you to save your own life, as well those of your loved ones. Making well-informed decisions here can help you in the event of a crisis. We need to know how to prepare, how to respond, and how to remain steady to safeguard wealth and lives.
Here is what you need to do to keep yourself well-prepared:
1. Remain Calm
When we panic, we often move towards rushed decisions. If you find yourself in an earthquake, take a deep breath so that you can think clearly and act fast.
2. Drop, Cover, and Hold On
If the ground starts shaking, then follow this standard safety action:
- Drop to your hands and knees
- Cover your head and neck under stable furniture
- Hold on until the shaking stops

If no strong table is nearby, crouch against an interior wall or beam and protect your head with your arms. Keep away from glass or stairs to stay safe from flying debris.
3. If Possible, Remain Indoors
Try not to run amok during an earthquake. Stay put if you are already indoors, because usually that is the safest choice until the shaking stops completely.
4. If Possible, Move to an Open Area
For those of you caught off guard outdoors during an earthquake, try to move away from trees, electric poles, buildings and glass fronts. Look for a clear space nearby, and if possible, take shelter there.
5. Keep Emergency Essentials At Hand
When you are well-prepared, it is less likely for you to get anxious and panic. Every homeowner should have a basic emergency kit with items like drinking water, non-perishable dry food items, flashlight with backup batteries, essential medication, portable charger or power bank, and essentials from a first-aid kit. Keep them handy in a place that is easily accessible to minimize time spent running about during a crisis.

6. Identify Safe Spots in Your Home
Identify strong, safe areas that can best protect you, such as strong tables or furniture, or in indoor corners far away from windows. Practice simple drills to get everyone prepared for the real deal.
7. Be Alert After the Shaking Stops
An earthquake is often followed by one or more aftershocks. After the initial shaking has stopped, take care when moving from one place to another, check for fallen debris or broken glass, switch off gas or electricity if you notice any damage, and keep yourself informed by checking official updates.
8. Support Others Around You
You might be the voice of reason in the event of a crisis. If that truly is the case, then try to remain the calm and comforting person when a crisis occurs. Children, elders, or anybody who needs reassurance might turn to you for an encouraging or comforting word. Try to be composed while offering help to give off the feeling of a sense of stability surrounding you.
Earthquakes will always remain unpredictable, but your response can show how alert and aware you truly are. Backed up by reliable information, a prepared home, and a calm mindset, you can get through the crucial moments with confidence. Staying calm is largely about protecting yourself and your loved ones with clarity & thoughtful action.
Be prepared today and build safety for tomorrow.
